Mama Shelter is a boutique hotel founded by Serge, Benjamin, Jérémie Trigano, Cyril Aouizerate and designer Philippe Starck with the intention of creating an unique, chilled out, romantic and interactive place. Designer & co-owner Philippe Starck’s vision of the Mama Shelter in Lyon was an ‘Urban Art Hotel’ with a fun and playful environment.
“Mama is an intellectual, creative, emotional tribe dispersed throughout the entire world: Istanbul, LA, Paris…From now on, the tribe from Lyon has its own Mama, its own Shelter. A Mama in Lyon, centre of France, is a strong symbol. Lyon, is a centre where all cultures, all ethnics, all creations blended together, sedimented, and gave birth to ideas that forged France, and the world. Mama brings along its cultural diversity, its wind of freedom, the smile of humour and the kiss of love .” says Designer Philippe Starck.
The hotel features 156 rooms with state-of-the-art amenities, public areas including a restaurant, bar, meetings rooms and recreational spaces. Every space has a surprise element attached to it. The reception area appears like a psychedelic basement featuring an all-black reception desk with a sledge shaped bench to welcome the visitors. The reception area, restaurant and bar ceilings are characterized by a matt finish charcoal black colour painted with random graffiti artwork. The restaurant and bar design concepts seem to have a pop art feel, with the use of bright & bold colours for furnishings, walls and multicoloured water tubes suspended from the ceilings. The meetings rooms, recreational area and library have an unique sense of perfection in the random combination and arrangement of objects. The art of creating perfection in randomness is what makes the Mama Shelter truly an ‘Urban Art Hotel’!
