A Guide to Green Domestic Practices Post -

We all want to do what we can to redress the balance of Mother Nature and when you consider the amount of domestic waste the average family would generate in a year, it does make you realise just how much damage we are doing to our planet. You may already be implementing energy saving improvements at home and all the family are conscious of water and power usage, saving where possible, and regarding recycling, you can make an improvement on any existing recycling policies you have by adopting a few of the eco-friendly practices listed below.

  • Responsible Waste Disposal – The term, “out of sight, out of mind” no longer applies with domestic rubbish. Source an established skip hire company that focuses on recycling and almost all of your waste will be recycled and reused. If you are in need of recycling services in Doncaster, an online search is the best place to start your quest for an eco-friendly waste management company.

  • Energy Conservation – Every family member should be aware of the best practices regarding energy conservation. Never leave a light on when not in use and don’t leave appliances plugged in, as this uses a significant amount of electricity. Does the central heating really have to heat rooms that are not occupied? Perhaps turn down the thermostat a few degrees, which isn’t an ordeal for anyone and with energy conservation, every little helps.

  • Recycle Green Waste – Lighting a bonfire is out of the question and rather than have the waste taken to a nearby landfill – which contaminates the ground – call in your local skip hire company and make sure they recycle green waste. That annual garden revamp is the perfect time for skip hire, and anything else in the home that is either unwanted or broken can be put to one side and included in the skip contents.

  • Food Waste – Rather than simply throwing uneaten food down the sink, put a small plastic bin (with a lid) next to the kitchen sink and scoop everything into it. This can then be used to create a small compost heap at the back of the garden. If you don’t yet grow your own vegetables, now is a good time to start and by creating your own organic garden, the food waste is being used to grow produce. Your drains will thank you for the absence of foodstuffs, thus reducing the risk of a drain blockage.

Once you have sourced a responsible waste management company that is local, they can be called whenever you have collected anything that is recyclable. All forms of metal, plastic and paper can be recycled and any domestic appliances or devices can be responsibly recycled, and if the car finally dies and you want rid of it, the local scrap dealer would pay handsomely in cash and the vehicle would be systematically stripped down, with many components finding their way onto other cars.

If you have neglected eco-friendly practices at home, it is never too late for a change. Call a family meeting and brainstorm ways of becoming more eco-friendly and you’ll be surprised at what you can do.
