The Toda House is an single family residence located in a residential area developed on a gentle perch in Hiroshima, overlooking a far view of the Inland Sea and Miyajima. Designed by Tokyo based architecture firm Office of Kimihiko Okada, the steel structure has been raised a few meters above the ground level using angular steel columns to provide a view over the roof of the neighboring house standing one level lower and some space for extension to create a a workspace in the future. The structural framework consists of one single continuous plate covered with a panel of insulated glass which allows plenty of natural light into the interior space during daytime. While. the gap between the structure assists in providing natural ventilation, the space below serves as a parking space for cars & bikes. It also provides an open, natural landscape, encouraging ‘green activities’, bringing urban dwellers closer to nature.
