An exploration of the lumbering process: ‘Billion’ – A log sculpture by artist Vincent Kohler

Created by Switzerland based artist Vincent Kohler, ‘Billion‘ is a log sculpture created from a combination of polystyrene and resin. The sculpture explores the infinite possibilities that can be derived from a section of a single log. The sculpture highlights the various compositions of lumber including the center pith and other vertical and flat grain pieces available in different dimensions. The lumber produced in the sawmills are widely used in the furniture or construction industry. While the focus of the artist is purely on the process of lumber manufacturing, the sculpture itself provides an interesting insight of the reason behind the logging industry exploitation and mass destruction of forests to fulfill the selfish needs of a consumerist society.
