Lamm created quite a buzz at the 2010 Fuori Salone Expo with its introduction of the Wotu Chair designed by Dante Bonuccelli. The chair is designed keeping in mind the environmental issues & the benefits of using recyclable material. Wotu chair comes without any carbon fibre or plastic foam composites which pollute the soil. Instead the designer has chose wood which is a warm material, malleable, renewable, completely natural.
A new technique (patent pending) which uses several layers of beech wood has been used for the construction of this chair. Layers are folded back onto themselves and glued to create natural tubes of wood. This way the best ratio between the amount of material and structural behaviour is obtained, with the least waste. The company, which has always focused on producing certified, long lasting items, continues this commitment through its choices made to benefit sustainable development.
According to the Designers, “Our idea was to experiment, as in the tradition of design, with the main aim being to take a piece to the very edge of lightness. Our artificial tubes in wood are manufactured by a company which uses trees originating exclusively from certified forests and correctly managed in both environmental and social terms….the trunks are stripped of leaves, the tubes assembled and joined together through internal connections, again in wood, a technique developed by Lamm in collaboration with 3C of Avezzano (Aquila province) – […] there is no intermediary transport – a tree goes into the factory and comes out as a chair. Left-over material is burnt, creating electricity which, together with photovoltaic panels, accounts for about 90% of production requirements”.
