“It is an active, playful form of meditation that requires you to focus”.
Our recent research about Land Art, also known as Earth art or Environmental art lead us to rock balancing artist Pontus Jansson‘s videos demonstrating his zen mastery by balancing rocks to create spontaneous installations. Even though his art might not be classified under land art, the level of patience needed to create such beautiful sculptures is impressive.
Here’s a short interview with the 33 year old artist who lives on an island called Öland in south of Sweden.
1). What inspired you and how did you start the rock balancing act?
I saw a rock tower on the beach here at Öland like 7-8 years ago. I thought it looked beautiful and i was into photography at the time. I started very simple at home with 1-2 rocks and I was hooked after my first success. I was thinking to myself , “that look so cool, it looks like the stones are floating in air”.
2). Do you practice some form of meditation and yoga that helps you to attain so much calm and composure during the act?
I have done some yoga in the past. I practice meditation during my free time and try to live a mindful, conscious life.
3). How would you define your art?
It is a active, playful form of meditation that requires you to focus. Your patience will be challenged a lot because it can take a lot of time to build something and many times it collapses on you.
4). Is there something you would like to share about life, the environment or yourself?
Life is short. So, find something you love to do and forget society ideals of how you should live your life. That’s all I can think of right now.
On the completion of his installation, it is photographed and sold online as a wall art, print on apparel, coffee mugs, phone cases on Pontus Jansson.
