The Sleeping Suburbs is a series of photographs taken by South African photographer, Paul Shiakallis in the suburban areas of Johannesburg, Melbourne & Nicosia. Paul Shiakallis was born in Johannesburg to parents of Cypriot descent. His father taught him how to use a camera at the age of 15 and hi first photographs were of TV screens and Flowers. In school he covered all sporting events for the high school magazine, and through art drawing, became infatuated by detail. After one year of Journalism at RAU he transferred to Pretoria Tech to study Photography for 3 years. He then assisted both local and international photographers for 5 years.
Paul is fascinated by Suburbia, as well as the people and places that are associated with it. From his travels to Cyprus, Australia, Brazil and now recently, the USA, the projects shot there have a mutual flavor to what he was producing at home; he then began to realize that his work had a distinct voice.
