UK born multidisciplinary artist Sophie Standing‘s textile art experimentation have resulted into a series of colorful textile collages of animals. Living in Kenya, Sophie draws much of her inspiration from the African wildlife. This combined with her passion for fabrics and textiles has enabled her to create an unique series of textile art featuring animals that are on the verge of extinction.
To create each piece she first sketches onto the fabric and later creates a dense patchwork of colours and textures using her fabric collection consisting of a wide range of designs and textures, ranging across haberdashery, dress making, quilting, new and vintage, floral, modern, wool, cotton, silk. Each work is finished by drawing the details over the top of the fabric with her sewing machine using many different coloured threads.
An influence of 19th century art can be found in Standing’s work and an extensive collection of decorative fabrics from her travels all over the world, make her colorful ‘collages’ a personal story.
