Furniture designed to support & empower women: Design for a cause by Koket & Global Fund for Widows

In the past 8 years of my practice in interior design, luxury design has always excited me. Shopping for high end furniture products is always at the top of the list for most designers. But, something that really moves me is meaningful design: Designs with a cause. Today, I would like to share the Camilia cabinet designed by furniture brand KOKET in collaboration ‘The Global Fund for Widows which is basically a U.S. based non-profit organization dedicated to empowering widows and female heads of households.

The Camilia cabinet was designed with the aim to support widows & single mothers, who are often victims of social problems like poverty in the developing world. KOKET has made a commitment to bringing an end to the vicious cycle of poverty by empowering the most vulnerable of the poor through skills based training, education, access to employment, and access to micro-capital. These efforts have culminated in the creation of this gorgeous statement piece. Proceeds from sales of the Camilia will be donated to widows giving them an equal opportunities to health, security, stability, and dignity.

The design of this stunning cabinet is inspired by the palaces of the aristocratic era in Egypt. It is built with expensive, high end materials like mother of pearl & gold leaf. A peacock is carefully hand carved by artisans with intricate detailing and finished with gold leaf. A peacock, which is also a symbol of integrity and the beauty we can achieve when we endeavor to show our true colors, beautifully illustrates the aim of this designer item, to integrate distressed women into society, while encouraging those with more to show our true colors of generosity and thoughtfulness towards the needy in our society.
