Artist Bill FitzGibbons lights up an underpass in Birmingham

Commissioned by the municipality of Birmingham, Alabama, Lightrails is a colourful lighting installation by American multimedia artist Bill FitzGibbons. The installation consists of a LED network of 250 units connected to a computerized system that enables the artist to pre-program and set up to 16 million colours and frequencies which can be emitted at specific times during the night. The underpass features intricate Art Deco architectural details and connects the Parks District area to the city center built in 1931. The vibrant rainbow-like installation not only serves as an interesting public art during the night, but is also intended to guide the visitors between the two areas and lights up the side-walk making it safe to walk for the pedestrians.
