When I first came across these murals painted on the exteriors of Church buildings, it instantly reminded me of the famous abstract expressionists, Jackson Pollock and Hans Hofmann. The creative mind & soul behind these breathtaking colorful murals is Atlanta native, Alex Brewer alias HENSE who is now a ‘celebrity figure’ in Atlanta. His work can be found in almost every neighborhood of Atlanta transforming sleepy streets into wonderlands.
HENSE’s mural installations are characterized by a combination of lines, shapes and organic forms. His works are filled with vibrant colors and spontaneity. I probably would even categorize it under the label of ‘action painting’, which was a term coined by America’s very famous art critic Harold Rosenberg.
“I generally work on things in a very instinctive way. I paint, spray or draw shapes and marks, then decide on what stays and what goes. I try to never be afraid to paint over something or make changes, allowing breakthroughs to the other side. Sometimes the part you hate the most about a painting becomes the most layered and interesting area once you’ve destroyed it.” – says HENSE
HENSE has also worked on numerous projects all over US and in other countries like Spain, France, Japan, Taiwan and Mexico…..Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all the churches, mosques & temples in this world were painted like this?
