Be it Douglas Coupland’s Gumhead<\/a>\u00a0or Yang Soo-in’s\u00a0<\/strong>interactive sculpture\u00a0Yobosayo<\/a>,\u00a0public art<\/a>\u00a0has always sparked a sense of curiousity amongst the masses and enhanced the\u00a0city’s aesthetic.<\/p>\n

Hungarian artist\u00a0Ervin Lor\u00e1nth Herv\u00e9<\/strong>\u2019s outdoor sculpture titled\u00a0Felt\u00e9pve <\/strong>(meaning “ripped up” or “popped up”) created for the\u00a0Art Market Budapest<\/a>\u00a0has been the talk of the town and received much appreciation from locals and tourists.<\/p>\n

As the title suggests, the gigantic man appears to have popped up from underneath the earth by ripping out a blanket of lush green grass. The angry expression on the man’s face is suggestive of human reaction to isolation. The colossal figure also appears as if he is gasping for breath\u00a0and needs to escape in to the open.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Rising 20 feet in the air, the lawn appears\u00a0to stretch over the giant\u2019s back, creating a new hill-like formation. Crafted from\u00a0polystyrene<\/a>, the surface is finished to appear\u00a0antiquated so that it can\u00a0blend in with the\u00a0historic architecture of\u00a0Budapest.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Funzine<\/a>,\u00a0Herv\u00e9 said that his goal\u00a0was to show people that pieces of contemporary art can be integral parts of a city and that they can become one of its building blocks. He adds, “I feel\u00a0that many more contemporary sculptures should be displayed on the streets of Budapest. I\u2019m positive that not only would the tourists love it, but the locals would appreciate it too. Let\u2019s dare to create!”<\/p>\n

After Budapest, the sculpture was\u00a0displayed in the city of Ulm in Germany on 23rd Ocotber 2014 which also marks as Hungary’s National Day. This specific day was chosen by\u00a0the\u00a0German authorities as a token of their\u00a0respect towards Hungary.<\/p>\n
