During the 2014 European Week of Sustainable Mobility, a bunch of pro-activist cyclists of the Let’s Bike It community peddled on the busy roads of Riga during peak hours with the goal of discouraging people to use cars and popularizing the cycle culture in Russia and other parts of Europe.

Unlike the regular protests with banners and slogan shouting, the Latvian cyclists organized a creative protest to demonstrate the amount of space taken up by cars on the road. The group built colourful, hand-crafted bamboo constructions of full-scale car frames which could be mounted on the shoulders of the rider.

The colourful visual display not only highlights the size differences between a car and biker, but also demonstrates the unreasonable amount of space occupied by cars to move one single person.

The protest not only created an awareness amongst the masses, but also started a positive conversation for the revival of social life in Russia and address the ecological issues caused by extensive use of cars.
