Designed by Omer Arbel of Canadian lighting company Bocci, Series 38 is an unique, state-of-the-art suspended pendant lighting comprising of large spherical glass bowls.

The design is a surrealistically motivated re-exploration of a technique of making originally developed for a previous project called 28, whereby air is pushed in and out of glass that is intermittently heated and cooled. In the case of this project, the technique is stretched to the limits of possibility. Large glass spheres are blown, and then 4 to 6 white cavities are introduced into them haphazardly, intentionally intersecting and colliding with each other. Out of these, 3 cavities are utilized to house light sources (either a 10 watt xenon or a 1.8 watt LED), while the rest of them can be utilized as a planter.

Electricity and suspension are achieved using stiff copper tubing, which is allowed to tangle and crinkle, seemingly without regard for gravity. Once in a while, these copper tubes loop around satellite white planters, appearing to have escaped from the confines of the lit clear glass spheres. This chandelier works best in groupings where the copper can be manipulated between multiple canopies to allow for limitless composition.

Bocci’s Series 38 is a great option for indoor as well as outdoor environments. Whether used as clusters over a dining table, as an accessory lighting in bathrooms, as linear configurations over bars, or large clusters in foyers and lobbies, the design will evoke a strong sense of curiosity.
