While working on one of his forthcoming feature film, South African artist and film maker\u00a0Ralph Ziman<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0collaborated with several\u00a0artists in Johannesburg\u00a0to create a side project that aimed at addressing the\u00a0international arms trade.\u00a0‘Ghosts’<\/strong>, is a series of photographs featuring 200 beaded guns and ammunition sculptures created by 6 Zimbabwean artisans commissioned by Ziman. The sculptures are made from traditional African beads and wire and are replicas of AK-47s and general purpose machine guns (GPMGs). \u00a0After the sculptures were finished, Ziman did a photo shoot of the artists as the subjects holding their creations. Other subjects consisted of\u00a0several construction workers who happened to witness the shoot, and a member of the South African Police Services who just wanted his picture taken.<\/p>\n The project\u00a0confronts the complex socioeconomic and political circumstances of the African arms trade \u2013 a multinational, multibillion dollar industry that moves in one direction only \u2013\u00a0into Africa.<\/i><\/p>\n ‘Ghosts’,\u00a0<\/strong>featuring the gun sculptures, installations, and photographs will be on display at\u00a0C.A.V.E Gallery<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Los Angeles<\/strong>\u00a0from 8th February until 2nd March 2014.<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n
