Designers & founders Zoe Coombes and David Boira of\u00a0New York based furniture, art and design studio Cmmnwlth<\/strong> have designed a set of suspended lamps called Seltanica Light.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Hand cast from white Gypsum, the lamps have a smooth & minimalist exterior and an intricate interior and are built to work with a range of standard bulbs.<\/p>\n

“The Seltanica Lamps are an attempt to restore the potentially powerful relationships between the smooth, and the ornate. While the minimal elegance of the lamp’s cool exterior thrives on simplicity, the interior’s rusticated walls, fleecy and shaggy enough to loose all sense of hard edge, read as soft surfaces.”<\/p>\n

The lamp design has an interesting combination of the industrial and the artisanal. The exterior appearance of the lamp maintains the industrial characteristic, making it possible for mass replication with precise detailing. On the contrary, the interior surface\u00a0is the result of a well controlled manual casting technique and skilful manipulation by the human hand. The highly textured \u00a0interior is filled with variegated, and erotically charged fats and folds deforming light and shadow, placed just where they perform best under the soft white glow of a frosted bulb.<\/p>\n
