This printed collection of vibrant and energetic typographical maps were painted by the graphic designer Paula Scher, partner at the successful design studio Pentagram. Paula Scher has been at the forefront of American design for 3 decades, and in the early 1990’s, began creating paintings, installations and drawings of maps of the world covered from top to bottom with words. Full of life and colour, these paintings depict the earth in a way that not only speaks to the topography, but also brings the importance of the name of continents, countries, cities, and towns to the forefront. It is also a strong social commentary, with notes on the political and social, focusing on the war on terror and the fear it created in North American society. The book cover even folds out to become a piece of art that can be hung on the wall, so these maps do not have to be confined to just a coffee table or a bookshelf.
These paintings are not only beautiful maps and uniquely intricate typography, but they speak to the humanity of the earth and all of it’s countries and inhabitants, on both a geographical and emotional level.
