Basque Culinary Centre By Vaumm Arkitektura

Designed by Spanish architectural firm, Vaumm Arkitektura, the Basque Culinary Center  is the head office for the gastronomic science university and research innovation center for gastronomic science in Donostia-San Sebastián in north of Spain. Sited within the steep slope, the U-shaped footprint emerges from the hill to enclose an open air internal green space of stepped terraces. The sloping terrain reveals a building volume reminiscent of stacked dinner plates set within the landscape. Five shifting bands bordering each storey conceal wrap-around verandas which allow panoramic views of the rugged scenery.The roof plane is blanketed with aromatic and edible herbs.     The illumination of the Culinary Center causes an enormous light pollution in the neighborhood. It emits a light cone into the sky which disturbs the neighbored public astronomical observatory. The light is switched on all night every night. Not only that the light emission is a clear violation of the Spanish decrete 1890/2008, that is to say, the illumination is simply ILLEGAL, one can also ask how it can be in accord with the declared goals of the center, which are sustainibility and ecology. Light projectors in front of the Culinary Center illuminate the fassades and front yards of neighbored private houses, not really a pleasure for the people who live there. Sustainibility and ecology include also technology assessment, to think about consequences of technologies, and by its illumination the Culinary Center shows already at a very elementary level between claim and reality. It is amazing that the Culinary Center which belongs to a university, apparently does estimate and respect the value of an astronomical observatory. The Culinary Center is to a large extent financed by tax money. Research budgets and budgets of universities are cut, and the Culinary Center wasts money to illuminate the night sky.
